If you discover a fire
Raise the alarm immediately at the nearest break glass call point, or by shouting fire if there is no alarm system. Call the fire service on 112 or 999 and give the full address and what is burning. Only attempt to tackle the fire if it is small, you are trained and your escape route is clear. Leave by the nearest exit and close doors behind you.
When the alarm sounds
Stop work, leave everything, do not collect belongings. Walk to the nearest available exit; do not use lifts. Fire wardens sweep their areas and direct people. Close doors as you go to slow the spread of smoke. Go straight to the assembly point and stay there. Do not re enter the building for any reason until a fire warden or the fire service gives the all clear.
Assembly point and roll call
The assembly point is a safe distance from the building, clear of fire service access. Wardens report their areas clear or name anyone unaccounted for. Reception or the chief warden checks visitors and contractors against the signing in record. Missing persons and their last known location are given to the fire service on arrival; nobody goes back in to search.
People who need assistance
Anyone who cannot use stairs unaided, or who may not hear or see the alarm, needs a personal emergency evacuation plan agreed in advance: a named buddy, a refuge point, an evacuation chair, a visual alarm. Wardens know who is on their floor and where the plan is kept.
Drills and review
Hold a full evacuation drill at least once a year and preferably twice, more often where staff turnover is high or the risk is higher, and cover every shift. Time the evacuation, note the problems and update the procedure. Keep records of every drill; fire authorities and insurers ask for them.
